How to Measure and Fit Made to Measure Curtains

Firstly, and contrary to common belief, your pole or track does not have to be in place before you measure.  In fact it can be an advantage if it isn’t, and here’s the reason: When your curtains arrive you can hang them onto the ole using the correct curtain rings or pin hooks, then with one person either side of the pole holding it in place, a third person can judge the distance off the floor.

The brackets can then be marked on both sides and then screwed to the wall, now you have perfectly fitting and straight curtains.  There is another advantage to this method; if your walls, ceilings or floor are not quite square you can make an adjustment to compromise and give the most suitable appearance to the eye that everything is level.

Always use a metal or wooden tape measure as cloth ones stretch and will not give an accurate measurement. Remember it’s the pole or track that you should measure, NOT the window, this is a mistake that I see time after time, could turn out to be very costly as quite simply you would not have enough gather or fullness. You should always try to measure the drop of the curtains in several places due to possible irregularities of the floor top pole distance.  Obviously take the smallest of those measurements and then deduct an amount to keep them off the floor, say either 1cm or 2cm.  Alternatively, you could co for the chic look and let them puddle on the floor like the picture below. Personally, I love this look, but it does take some courage to choose it.

When fitting your curtains, it’s always easier if there are a minimum of two people as curtains can be very heavy. Gather in the strings then tie in a secure bow, to ensure that they don’t pull through, remember to use a bow because you may wish to change the gather or indeed undo them if you have them dry cleaned in the future.

Next space out the hooks evenly to match the number of rings or gliders that you have.  Its very important that you get them evenly distributed to stop the curtains sagging in certain places, so try to get them like the picture below.

Get a steady step ladder and then start to hook them onto the rings on the pole or track, this is where you will need someone else to take the weight of the curtains for you. Otherwise you will not get a nice even finish for the curtains.

Finally, when they are hanging correctly, encourage them into their pleats by gently running your hands down each pleat several times per day.  A warm room will help with the falling out of the creases, be patient and take loving care of your curtains and they will end up like this.

If you vacuum your curtains regularly with the right attachment, you should never need to clean or wash them, that way they will last you for many years.
